Saturday 24th June 2023, 11:45am: Lunchtime concert in Chesterfield Library.
We returned to Chesterfield Library, this time teaming up with pianist Andrew Marples. Our programme included trios by Clara Schumann and Sergei Rachmaninov.
Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio in G minor was premiered in 1846 in Leipzig and was very well received at the time, with reviewers praising her ‘calm mastery of formal techniques’ and describing it as a masterpiece.
To celebrate Rachmaninov’s 150th birthday, the second piece in this concert was his first Trio élégiaque, written when he was 18 and in only four days. The single-movement work is dominated by a repeated four-note motif and has many similarities to the first movement of Tchaikovsky’s Trio in A minor.
